CURRENCY OF U.S.A.

LEGAL POWER TO DEVALUATE SHOULD BE VESTED IN THE PRESIDENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 6th October. President Roosevelt indicated in a press interview to-day that if he is re-elected, he will ask Congress to extend his legal nowers to devaluate the currency which normally expires on 30th January, 1937. He stated that the primary purpose of the American currency policy was to protect Bomestic values, for which reason emergency powers should be invested in the Government to prevent the destruction of domestic values through the unexpected action of other nations. The inference is drawn from his reference to emergency powers that he is not contemplating further devaluation under the existing conditions.
