ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION

SUB-CENTRE ACTIVITIES The new executive of the t subcentre of the St. John Ambulance Association has now been elected and representatives from most of the sports bodies and kindred associations in Nelson have been elected. It consists of the following: Dr. D. C. Low, president; Messrs A. S. G. Adam (Rotary), E. Bourne-Webb (Hockey Association), J. Fitz-Gerald (Hospital Board), E. M. Jackson (Automobile Association), H. Williams (Rugby Union), E. Reid (Emergency Committee), J. H. Huston (Wakefield Branch), F. W. Huggins, R. W. Martin, and representatives from the Ambulance, Nelson and Cadet Divisions. The chief problem before the executive was a suitable hall for lectures and practices, and the committee has this in hand now, and hopes that it will soon have buildings of its own. The matter of finance is of course an urgent one. A Home Nursing class has been started and early in the new year First Aid classes will also be held.

On Friday, 16th instant, a street day collection will be held and it is hoped that the public will respond generously as it is imperative that funds be collected to enable the divisions or uniform branch to go out into the sports field or wherever the public are gathered together in numbers, to render first aid to the injured, to buy their necessary bandages, etc.

It does not seem to be generally known, but all these men and women who go out each week to do this humane work give their services voluntarily, and no member of the St. John Ambulance organisation in Nelson receives payment for any of these services, and often members, going out of town to attend sports gatherings pay their fare out of their own pockets. The funds necessary to run the whole of the organisation in Nelson are very low indeed, in fact under £l5O per annum, and as the services given to the public are oai of all proportion to the amount required it is hoped that the appeals to be made will meet with a good response.
