OBITUARY

MRS M. J. MASON Mrs M. J. Mason who passed away at her late home, Waimea street, on Thursday, the Ist inst., was the eldest daughter of the late William and Mrs Askew of Riwaka. Her parents on both sides were among the best known, of Nelson’s pioneers. The Askew family took a prominent part in founding the Riwaka settlement 94 years ago, while Mrs Mason’s mother.. who was Jane Gifford, was a member of the well-known Appleby Gifford family, who hold a grand record in pioneering both in Nelson and Marlborough. Mrs Mason was afflicted with delicate health from the time of her birth, but owing to possessing the indomitable spirit and courage of her pioneering parents, she never gave in till she was struck down with paralysis a few days before her death. Gifted with unbounded kindness and hospitality her home for many years past has been a sanctuary to scores of people. Over fifty years ago she married the late Mr Thomas Mason, who for many years was so well and ' favourably known in business in Nelson. • She leaves three daughters to mourn the loss of an exemplary mother, viz., Mrs Frank Batchelor of Nelson, Mrs Simpson of Wakefield, and Miss Mason of Waimea street. There are four grandchildren.
