CLOUSTON CRASHES
NO INJURIES SUSTAINED PASSENGER ALSO ESCAPES THE MACHINE, WRECKED (United Press Association—By Electric Tolegraph—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, 4th October. Clouston crashed at Gwelo, 130 miles south of Salisbury. The machine was wrecked. Clouston and his passenger, Tasker, were uninjured, Owing to engine trouble Clouston had been able to make only short hops, but covered 1400 miles on Saturday, landing safely at Tabora, Abercorn, and Mpika before being forced down at Otoko, where he took 12 gallons of petrol and restarted for Salisbury. His non-arrival caused great anxiety, and every available plane started a search at midnight.
ENTEBBE, 3rd October. Clouston left at 3.30 a.m. for Johannesburg. By short stages he reached Mpika and resumed on his way to Salisbury. RETIREMENT OF SMITH CAIRO, 3rd October. Mr Victor Smith, after another delay, left for Khartoum where on arrival he announced his retirement from the race.
