CENTRAL TENNIS CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING BY MR K. J. HOLYOAKE, M.P. (From Our Own Correspondent) On Saturday afternoon at the Central Tennis Club’s courts, a large number of members, friends and representatives from the Riverside, Kia Ora and Motueka clubs assembled for the official opening, which was performed by Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P. The afternoon was warm and sunny; and the courts were in good playing order. Mr Holyoake, in the first place, apologised for the absence of Mrs Holyoake and of Mr and Mrs Ching, who, though unable to be present, sent best wishes for a successful season. He extended thanks to the club for again doing him the honour of electing him president, and stated that he would this year be taking an active part in the game. He remarked on the number of new members who had joined up, and, in heartily welcoming them, said he felt sure the coming' season would be even better than the previous one. As president of the club he wished, on this public occasion, to make reference to the wonderful work done, over a period of years, by Mr B. Jenkins; the progress made by the club had been due entirely to the efforts of the secretary, and, although members were losing his services in that capacity, Mr Jenkins would be continuing to be of assistance to the club as its treasurer. Mr T. McNabb was now undertaking the secretarial duties and would be a worthy successor to Mr Jenkins. After expressing the hope that all would spend a very pleasant afternoon on the courts, Mr Holyoake called on Mrs Bridger to play the first' ball, and the courts were declared open for the season. A number of friendly matches, arranged by the club’s captain, Mr A. Monahan, were played, and a delicious afternoon tea, dispensed by the lady members was much enjoyed.

DANCE At the dance, held'in the evening, over one hundred patrons attended, and, with spirited music supplied by the Gaiety Band, the function proved both enjoyable and successful. Mr B. Hickmott capably carried out the duties of M.C. and Mr H. Williams junior played extras. An excellent supper was served by members of the ladies committee.
