DEAR FOOD
ATTACKING THE PROBLEM GOVERNMENTS HAVE A DUTY GENEVA DISCUSSIONS (United Press Association— By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright)
GENEVA, Ist October. The Second Committee resumed its discussion on nutrition. Sir James Parr declared that the most satisfactory way to attack the problem was along the line of increasing purchasing power. New Zealand had restored wages to the pre-depres-sion level, while reducing hours. Food, however, was still too dear, owing to inefficient distribution. Too many unnecessary middlemen were handling Dominion produce. For instance New Zealand apples costing 8d per pound in Europe, brought the grower only Id per pound. The League’s valuable work on nutrition should not be used as an excuse for individual governments delaying action. It was gratifying to find that a number of Governments had already realised their obligations.
