ABYSSINIAN EMPEROR’S £3OOO FROM WORLD APPEAL (By Air Mail—From A Special Correspondent) LONDON, sth September. Haile Selassie, dethroned Emperor of Abyssinia, has become Europe’s Forgotten Man. He is still in London, but daily the prospects of return to his country have become more remote. When the League refused him the loan he asked for, he decided to make a public appeal to the world. Pie had hoped to realise sufficient money to re-equip his army and begin a new campaign againr- ;:ie Italians. It was necessary to obtain at least £200,000. But the tola) subscriptions received since the appeal was launched seven ,v eks ago amount to less than £3,000.
‘My appeal to the world for my distressed country has failed to bring a response sufficient even for my own personal needs” the Emperor said this week to an interviewer.
He summoned Dr. Martin, his Minister in London, so that the exact amount could be given. “The exact amount is £2,978” Dr. Martin said.
The Emperor continued: “I alia 11 never return to Abyssinia without the means to continue the fight against the Italians. I must always hope. I will not believe that truth and justice will not pre"aii in the world.”
