TAHUNA HEADMASTER
RETIREMENT OF MR H. B. SANDERS The pupils, staff and committee of the Tahunanui school assembled in the Town Hall to farewell Mr H. B. Sanders, the headmaster, who is retirihg from teaching after 40 years’ service. Following a short programme provided by.the pupils the acting head teacher, Mrs K. Henderson, who was in the chair, welcomed members of the committee and the Rev. J. Hay, representing the Ministers’ Association. Mr J. Fleming, in the absence of the chairman of the committee, paid a tribute to Mr Sanders’ work for the school during his term of 14 years as headmaster. He referred to the success of many former pupils of the school who had had the benefit of Mr Sanders’ teaching, and he referred to the good influence the retiring headmaster had had on the boys and girls passing through the school. Mrs McAllister in presenting a crystal salad bov/1 and service to Mrs Sanders wished her happiness and good health in the future years. The Rev. Mr Hay said he had always enjoyed his weekly visit to the school, and referred to the good behaviour of the children. He knew Mr Sanders as a Christian gentleman and wished him every happiness in his years of retirement. Mrs Henderson said Mr Sanders had always been just and kind in dealing with'the staff and pupils, and he would be greatly missed by them. The tone of the school had been of a, high standard, Mr Sanders had a knowledge of many forms of sport both for boys and girl's, and the school looked forward to having his assistance in the future as he would not be leaving the district. On behalf of the school Mrs Henderson presented Mr Sanders with an eight-day clock. Mr Sanders in reply expressed appreciation of the presentations to his wife and himself, and thanked the various speakers for their expressions of goodwill. He had been at the school for 14 years and had seen it grow, and he congratulated the committee on the improvements to the grounds. In conclusion, he paid a tribute to the efficient staff, referred to the happy atmosphere in the school, and wished the children every success. As the final item Mr Sanders was asked to conduct the senior classes in the singing of a chorus.
