BULK WHISKY
EXHAUSTION OF NEW ZEALAND SUPPLY IMMINENT AMERICAN MARKETS EASIER OF ■ ACCESS DECISION OF SCOTTISH FIRMS liy Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. It is only a matter of months tiefore the supplies of bulk whisky in New Zealand will be exhausted. Scottish firms have declined to send further shipments to New Zealand owing to markets in America being easier of access and free from the exchange difficulty, which has been a source of annoyance. The big Scottish firms have been in the habit of carrying the adverse exchange themselves. The Scottish manufacturers had continued to supply the New Zealand market with bulk whisky and pay the exchange themselves in the hope of tiie Labour Government raising the exchange rate, said an importer, but their patience was now exhausted. Although they were supplying case whisky at a loss the market was too valuable to lose, and they were hanging on in the hope of the exchange being removed, or at least reduced to more remarkable level.
Bulk whisky had until lately been available, but at an exorbitant price. The price had increased by 150 per cent. Even then there had been difficulties in getting supplies. Now came the latest advice from Scotland that no more bulk whisky would be sent to New Zealand. The demand this year in America was confidently expected to increase by 100 per cent. Thus the, manufacturers were in a position to dictate their terms.
