WORK ON SATURDAYS
POSITION OF TRADESMEN WARNING BY MINISTER
Tradesmen who formerly * worked five and a half days a week but who have now been awarded a five-day week of forty hours are warned by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) that they must not undertake work at their trade ' on their own account on Saturdays. “Complaints by employers have been made to me that' tradesmen, such as plumbers, are doing this,” said the Minister to-day. “By such actions they are taking unfair advantage of their employers who have been compelled to restore the ‘cuts’ and pay for five days’ work a wage equivalent to that of five and a half days.” The Minister expressed doubts as to whether the complaints were justified, but indicated that steps would be taken by the Government to prevent anything of the kind. He mentioned that Government servants had been included in the complaints, and added that they would be treated the same, in regard to Saturday work as were the employees of private concerns.
