NARROW ESCAPE

MAN ON RAILWAY LINE (By Telegraph—Press Association) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Brought to a sudden stoiJ on the Longburn Bridge, the north-bound main trunk express narrowly missed running over a man who was crawling on his hands and knees between the rails. The man was an inmate of the old people’s home at Awapuni, who was suffering from loss of memory and had wandered from the institution. When the engine entered on the bridge, the driver saw the man between the rails. The brakes were applied which promptly brought the train to a stop a short distance from the man, who was lifted into the engine until the bridge was crossed, then placed in the guard’s van, brought to Palmerston North and restored to the home.
