NEW AUSTRALIAN TARIFF
OPPOSITION BY JAPAN NEGOTIATIONS RE-OPENED (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright) CANBERRA, 15th June. Sir Henry G’ullett, Minister in Charge of Trade Treaties, stated today that trade negotiations had been re-opened with Japan through Mr Murai, Consul-General at Sydney, and it is expected that immediate retaliation by Japan against the recently imposed textile duties will be avoided. Sir Henry Gullett pointed out that Japan was awakening to the fact that the Australian new tariff was not nearly so harmful as anticipated, and there was now a much better understanding as the result of two-way communications since the publication of the schedule.
