NELSON IN 1942

(To The Editor) gj ri —in the last few days there have been some very interesting letters dealing with the advancement of Kelson. Now, sir, if you will glance at the headlines, you will notice that within six years Nelson will pass the century mark. This will be the most momentous year in Nelson’s history. The question will arise, is anything being done? In the last 94 years Nelson nas been very backward in coming forward, and now we have a glorious opportunity to put Nelson on the map permanently. Will any Nelsonian shout in 1942 “Look what we have done?” Certainly not. Why if Captain Arthur Wakefield was alive, he would tell you that the present water scheme and electric system were his idea. Personally I don’t think he suggested the local tip; that was perhaps done by somebody who had a grudge against Nelson. Now, sir, I have a few ideas of my own on the advance of Nelson that I would like to put forward. It will bring forth criticism, but it will be worth it. Firstly, a memorial to the pioneers who made Nelson. Why not erect a powerful beacon on the Port hills close to where the first landing was made? This light would be seen from far and near. Secondly, we are in need of a town hall. Thirdly, let us complete our beautiful Cathedral. I mean the one with the tin roof—it is a glorious sight. Fourth, why not combine the Art Gallery and Museum together? Surely the museum is worthy of a better place than its present abode. In conclusion, sir, I would suggest that the Council remove their tip, charge Id per unit for light and heating, mend their footpaths, and give us a decent grandstand at Trafalgar Park. —I am, etc., 1942. Nelson, ICth June.
