NOTES ON THE GAME (By “Gallery”)

The number present at the inter-house basketball last night is an indication that interest in the new winter recreation is not only being maintained but is increasing. It.’s a case of ‘ come early and get a seat” already. Hurst's are getting a good grip of tlie game, but Trathon s were carrying two passengers. It is a pity some players forget that there is such a tiling as defence required in a well played match. Convent have shown themselves to he a combination that will be hard to beat, and sprang such a surprise on Buxton’s that the latter got well rattled. Tlie most even game of the evening was that between Y.M.C.A. and the Rebecca- Lodge. We were pleased to see the Lodge girls give such a good account of themselves, and perhaps the “Y” girls will learn to goal better, or rather feed the lone that can more often in future. With four goal throwers in the team Stationers showed us what can be done to the score. Our motto from now on must be, “every member a goal thrower.” Rialto should learn to get the ball into play quicker and then try to keep it in play. McKay’s managed to hold their own with McKenzie’s for the first half, but tlie combination broke down in the second spell. McKenzie’s look as though they will he hard to boat later on. Louisson’s managed to stage a comeback to first night form, and did much better than last week. Lock’s must concentrate on surer passing and so regain possession of the ball. They have a good goalie if given a chance. But what about the men’s games? Some of them are just wild scrambles. When are some of the players going to start using their heads instead of their weight ? We were pleased to see that Builders have settled down to play the game and their exhibition against Y.M.C.A. show's that they will have the best teams within beating range very soon. Tennis Club spoilt tlie game against St. John Ambulance by not studying the rules. Too much two onto one, charging of opponents, arid collaring will mar any game. i>e satisfied with looking after your own man. Civil Service and Fire Brigade should also note this.

Regimental played the best game we have seen them play this year, and deserved their win from \Vesley ; Perhaps the Wesley team missed their usual jumpiiig-centre. We were disappointed with Mosley Old Boys. Wo have been expecting to see some basketball from them. Perhaps they will do belter after a few more games. Trathen’s improved in the second spell. Their trouble is lack of position and directed movements.
