STREET FIRE ALARMS TO BE INSTALLED 1

_ j REDUCTION IN ESTIMATES A reduction was made in the estimates for the Coming year of the Nels’cm Fire Board, which lield its annual meeting in Wellington on Tuesday. The estimates were fixed at £2,257, as compared with £2699 last year. The levy on tlie City Council has been reduced from £995 to £982 this year. The total expenditure has been reduced in spite of the fact that provision has been made for the annual charges on a fire alarm system. The board decided to instal a street fire alarm system of the “break-, the glass and press the button’”-type, and instructions, were gicen for arrangements, to be made for raising the' necessary loan. For tlie time being it is proposed to erect 25 alarm boxes which will be largely concentrated in the business area of the town. It is anticipated that the system will cost approximately £9OO. Accounts passed for payment totalled £551 9s 2d.

Four probationers were confirmed into full membership of the brigade as follows : Messrs C. Drummond, R. Moore, L. Kitching and R. Grant. j ;, The balance sheet was presented showing a credit in the income and expenditure account on the year’s working of £226 11s 3d.
