IMMIGRATION QUESTION COMPLETE VOLTE FACE (United Press Association' AUCKLAND, 30th March. There had been a complete political volte face in Australia concerning immigration, said Mr F. W. Doidge, who returned bv the Niagara, to-day. A few months ago the Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, said he would never permit a policy of immigration while there was an unemployed mail in Australia. Now Mr Lyons and Mr Hughes were seeking a policy of immigration. The question Was a first-rate- political issue. Sir Philip Gibbs,, iu an article published in Australia, had.stated llmt^ unless the Commonwealth and New Zealand opened their gates td. immigration the gates would be . broken - down. Mr Doidge suggested that tens of thousands of Britishers in retirement'after spending a lifetime in India and the East should be attracted to Australia and New Zealand.
