AUTUMN EXHIBITION

SUTER ART SOCIETY (INC.) ART CRAFT DISPLAY The art craft section, in the Art Society's exhibition at present being held in the Sutor Art Gallery, although small, displays an interesting diversity of treatment of materials. Unfortunately amongst the needlework are to he found a few exhibits in which tiie designs arc not the work of the craftswoinan exhibiting. Apparently these members have not realised that the aim of tiie society is to encourage and show only original work, and that beautiful execution does not compensate for lack of originality in design. Miss M. G. Ruddle exhibits an attractive nut-bowl in marquetry.

Miss A. NT. Davies’ book-ends and “Bougie” are clever representations of the feiine form in pottery. Miss G. A. Bisley is represented by an attractive pot-pouri bowl in copper, decorated with fret-work motifs and an enamelled lid.

An interesting innovation is to be found in the work of Miss Z. L. Turner,, a plate and box covered with pewter which has been decorated with painted enamel. .Miss W. Shanks also exhibits a box on which is this same type of decoration. She has also to her credit a copper flower jug.

Miss A. F. Johnson’s mat made from fleece wool is a very interesting exhibit, t lie whole process of manufacture, including the dyeing of the fleece, being the work of this member. Mrs D. M. Allen’s contribution is a needle-etching. Mrs S. M. Rroekett has submitted a finely embroidered tablecloth and four mats, and a well executed tapestry firescreen. Miss E. Powric’s three bags and a piclure, all in tapestry, are well designed and executed. Mr Drake’s oak Jacobean clock is a beautiful piece of work. TWO ATTRACTIVE ETCHINGS , In the write-up of pictures for this exhibition it was inadvertently omitted that two etchings which have been much admired were executed by Mr W. Houlker. The exhibition will close on Monday next at* 5 p.m. Working members are reminded that 4th April Is the last receiving day for pictures to be sent for the Rota exhibitions.
