DISTRICT ELECTRICAL SUPPLY
GOVERNMENT OR HUME PIPE SCHEME? CONFIRMATION OF MINISTER’S STATEMENT WANTED When a deputation from the Nelson City Council and Waimea Power Board made representations to the Government on the 29th February regarding an electrical supply scheme for the district, the Prime Minister (the Hon. M. J. Savage) gave an assurance that the Government would provide a scheme if it decided not to permit the Hume Pipe Company to proceed with the proposed Cobb Valley scheme. At last night’s meeting the City Council decided to write to the Prime Minister asking for confirmation of his verbal reply to the deputation. Councillor S'. A. Gibbs, who moved the motion, said the Nelson district’s claims for an electrical service were greater than the claims of districts where it was now proposed to undertake large works. If £2,000,000 could be made ayailable for development in other districts, Nelson, where there was no district supply, should request £250,000 for a suitable scheme.
The Dlayor (Dir G. L. Page) stated that in reply to the deputation the Prime Dlinister had said that the Government would provide a scheme if the Hume Pipe Company was not allowed to proceed. Air Savage had assured them that they would not have to wait long; they would not have to wait 12 months before knowing the Govern,--ment’s intentions.
