TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

NELSON LAWN TENNIS CLUB FINALS TO-MORROW The finals of the championships of the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club in five events, will be played to-morrow afternoon commencing at 1.30 o’clock with the hoys singles, in which B. M. O’Connor and S. Walter are the finalists. O’Connor won last year, when he defeated T. Martin, and judging on present form he should win again this year. One semi-final m the men’s singles has yet to he played (Beatson and Alabin). The winner will meet Williamson in the final. Williamson has won five times in seven attempts in the past eight seasons. In tile ladies’ singles (semi-final) Miss O’Donnell had a long match with Aliss King. Aliss King established an early lead which she held to 6-4, but Aliss O’Donnell’s pace and steadiness proved too much, and won her 5 games in a row making the score 9-6. Aliss King’s volleying was not severe enough, and on many occasions when in a key position she allowed Aliss O’Donnell to retrieve, and usually for winners. Dee and Simpson accounted for two seeded pairs in the men’s doubles, defeating last year’s holders (Williamson and Hodgson) in 3 sets, and Kirk and Gower in two sets. Both these matches were played in the same afternoon when the winners were playing at the top of their form. Both victories were well deserved.

In the ladies’ doubles neither pair has been extended in the eliminating rounds, hut should provide entertaining tennis for the final.

The matches to he played are as follows (the ladies’ singles between Airs Beatson and Aliss J. O’Donnell being postponed until 4th April):— Boys’ singles : O’Connor and Walter. Men’s singles: Williamson and winner of Beatson v. Alabin. Ladies’ doubles; Alisses O’Donnell and King v. Airs Beatson and Miss Prussing. Men’s doubles: R. and L. Best v. Dee and Simpson. Combined doubles; Air and Airs Beatson v. Miss Prussing and R. Best. Tennis enthusiasts and the public are cordially invited to see the matches. Afternoon tea will be provided and admission is free. Last year’s holders of the various trophies were:— Men’s singles : V. Alabin (Kerr Gup). Ladies’ singles: Aliss J. O’Donnell (Kerr Cup). Ladies’ doubles: Aliss J. O’Donnell and Airs Smith (Trathen Cup). Mens doubles; Williamson and Hodgson (Duncan Cup). Combined Doubles: Aliss Nossiter and V. Alabin (Club Cup). Boys’ singles: B. O’Connor.
