CHRYSANTHEMUM CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD (From Our Own Correspondent) Tiie annual meeting of the .Motueka. Chrysanthemum Club was held in the Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesday evening, when the president, Mr Wei by Drummond, occupied the chair. Tiie annual report and the balance sheet, which showed a credit of £4 12s 6d, were read and adopted on the motion of Mr Pruning and Mrs R. C. Scott. The Rev. H. Bloomfield was elected a member of the club. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Office bearers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr W. Drummond (re-elected); secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. T. Brough (reelected) ; assistant-secretary, the Rev. 11. Bloomfield: schedule committee, Messrs W. Bridle, 11. Young. R. Fry, the Rev. H. Bioomfield and Mesdames R. Scott, W. Bruning and J. T. Brough. It was decided that the Chrysanthemum Show be held on Friday, Ist May, and that the following be asked to act as judges: Mr Corby (chrysanthemum class), Mr S. B. Dobbie (cut flowers, pot plants and vegetables), Mrs S. B. Dobbie (decorative) and Mr H. L. Goodman (cookery section). It was also decided that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to Mr Bridle in his illness. Mr Bridle is keenly interested in the club and an exhibitor of very line blooms. ANNUAL REPORT Tiie report for the year ending. 25th March 1936 was as follows: The annual show was held in the Horticultural Hall on Friday, 26th April 1935, and was well patronised by exhibitors and the public. This show was a decided improvement on those of previous years, some beautiful blooms being staged. It is pleasing to note that the quality and freshness of the blooms improves each year. Trophies: There was as usual keen competition in all classes, and the trophies were well distributed. Mr W. Bridle was the winner of the National Tobacco Company’s Cup for champion Japanese and also of the Kitchingman trophy for ilie best six Japanese. Mr Bridle now retains this trophy, having won it three times. He i s to be congratulated on his success. Mr Bridle’s trophy for the best 12 Japanese went to Mr J. Chapman, who also won the “Church” Cup for most points in the show. The Club’s trophy for 3 Japanese distinct was won bv Mrs J. W. Fowler and Mrs Brough’s trophy for champion Chinese by Mr Welbv Drummond. In th* novice section Mrs R. Rowling was the winner of Mr Drummond’s trophy and in the junior section Master Dennis Frv took first place.

Special thanks are due to the judges of the various classes at the show, and the kindness shown and advice given by Mr Corby of Stoke, calls for special mention. The club also wishes to thank all those who have so willingly assisted in contributing to the success of the show. The club is sorrv to recor dthe loss sustained to its membership by the departure from the district of the Rev. Murray-Feist, who was a most energetic and valued member. RIVER BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Motueka River Board was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening, when there were present Messrs A. E. Fry (chairman), E. C. Fry and A. D. Taylor. Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Messrs B. T. Rowling and 11. J. Trewavas. , • ; INSPECTION AND DEMONSTRATION Arising out of the minutes the chairman stated that, owing to the members of the board having been engaged in seasonal work, an inspection of the Brooklyn Creek, as arranged for at the previous meeting had not so far been carried out. He moved that the inspection take place on 9th April and thatthe clerk arrange for a demonstration of a flame throw on the same date. This was seconded by Mr E. C. Fry and carried. Mr W. E. A. Gibbs wrote stating tjiat he '.had recently requested jthe Borough Council to advise him whether the natural watercourse through section 10 on D.P.319, part, section 156, Molucca, original, was still under the jurisdiction of the borough by virtue of provisions of the Land Drainage Act, or if their control had passed to the River Board. So far he had not received a reply and presumed his letter had been addressed to the wrong administrative authority. The Board decided that Mr Gibbs’ letter be held over until the next meeting, in order to ascertain the position. Mr K. J. Holyoake M.P. advised re the Board’s further request for a PublicWorks’ grant to enable the Board to carry out a comprehensive survey work’, that he had received a telegram from the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works in regard to same. The telegram read, inter alia :—‘ ‘My Department- will provide £2 for £1 subsidy up to £l5O, which would mean that- the River Board would have to find £75. This corrects my letter to you of 6th instant, and I should be glad if you would notify the River Board at your earliest convenience.” The clerk was instructed to forward a lettev to Mr Holyoake thanking him for the assistance he had rendered on behalf of the Board. Mr T. A. Johnston, District Engineer, forwarded five copies of a revised specification for tlm survey and report on till; Motueka River protection works. It was suggested that four months should be allowed for the survey and the preparation of the plans and report. In relation to any scheme likely to involve Government expenditure or Government subsidy, the writer stated that the approval of the proposals by the Department would be necessary. On the motion of Messrs E. C. Fry and A. D. Taylor the Board decided that estimates he called for the survey and report of the Motueka River in accordance with the revised specifications and plans drawn up by the District Engineer. E. Funuell and Co., applied for permission to remove spoil and shingle from the Motueka River for filling on the western approach to the Motueka. Bridge. The request to remove spoil was granted. The Controller and Auditor General returned a statement of accounts of the Motueka River Board, for year ended 31st March 1935. which had been certified. Accounts. amounting to £l3 3s 9d were presented and passed for payment.
