SUCCESS OF NELSON ATHLETES 15 POINTS MARGIN OVER MARLBOROUGH LOCAL TEAM WIN TROPHY FOR, FIRST TIME

On Saturday at Blenheim the Nelson Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s Loam won the Mahar Cup for the first lime in competition with Marlborough and Westport teams. Nelson gained 7U£ points, .Marlborough 55J, and Westport 9.

In the first heat of tiie 100 yards there were 4 starters. Chapman produced a second place for Nelson. In ihe second heat Manssen had no chance against the speedy Bartlett of Blenheim. There were 9 starters in the half mile run At the 200 Hurst led the field, in tile ia.st lap the pace was on and two Mari borough competitors led into (he straight. Eaton lilted first place, Eagan second and Hurst third.

in the Junior 100 yards there were 7 starters and Nelson gained all three places. In the final of the 100 yards Column, Chapman, dost, Bartlett, .McMillan and Strachau were the competitors. E. Coleman ran a good race to gain first place. The Westport representative was second and Chapman, of Nelson, third.

In the first heat of the 75 yards ladies, .Miss Ford of Nelson gained a third. In the second heat .Miss O’Callaghau and .Miss Howard gained first and second places. In the high jump Keats and Richmond of Marlborough and Fields of Nelson were left in flic final, all clearing tile bar at, sft din, Fields and R. Keats tied for first place in this event. The final of the Judies’ 75 yards saw •Miss O’Callaglmn run a good race to win in 9 3-ssocs. In the final of the half mile cyclists, Tom Langley went into a good position and held it throughout, putting in a good sinint to get first place. Tiller and C rooks were each placed in 220 yards first iieat and Woods ran into second place in the second heat.

The first heat of (lie 229 senior saw Manssen notch a win, while in the second heat Chapman and Blue were placed. In the mile Marlborough proved (o be too good, gaining first and second. Holyoake gained a third after running well, as well as being pace-maker throughout. In the one mile cycle the Nelson riders were T. Langley, E. Langley and T. Jarvis. This trio worked admirably as a team, each taking Japs and also kept in handy positions. In the last lap the pace was on and Langley, Caldwell (Westport), and Stephens all finished well to cross the line in that order. la the 100 yards ladies’ Miss O Callaghan won comfortably from Miss O'Rourke of Blenheim in the first heat. In the second Miss Howard rail into second place for Nelson. In the 220 yards final, R. Tiller, who ran well, gained first place, E. Crooks finished strongly lo fill second place.

The 220 yards senior final saw E. Coleman, the Marlborough speedster!, run out the winner in tiie time of 24 3-ssecs. N. Manssen, Nelson, was placed second and A. Slrachau (Westport) third.

The hop, step and jump was won by A. M. Moore (Nelson). All three efforts were over the 43ft mark, his best being 44ft 9J.in.s. McMorland notched a second, doing 53ft. 3ins on his last attempt.

Li flic final of the 100 yards Indies, Miss L. O’C'allaghan who was in good form produced a decisive win. Misses Deilv and .1. O’Rourke, of Blenheim filled second and third places. At (bis stage of (be meeting Nelson was in a good position oil the score board.

The 440 yards produced a good race. Fields led for tlm 220 yards with Tiller and Eaton lying handy. Entering the straight Tiller and Eaton were on level terms. H. J. Eaton (Blenheim) won after a good final sprint, Tiller finishing strongly for second place, with Fields third. In the three mile cycle there were 9 starters. With three laps to go two Blenheim competitors went out to make a fairly smart break, but Caldwell, Langley, Luinmis and Osgood moved into good positions. Caldwell, Osgoud and Langley were fighting it out in the iast lap. Tom Langley again annexed the major points. Caldwell who finished second, was disqualified and so Osgood, Blenheim, took second place, with A. Luinmis third.

At that stage Nelson had a good lead and were certain to win the cup. However the ladies’ and men’s medley races bad yet to be decided and Nelson won both and were given an ovation by file spectators.
