ROVER DEFEAT PIRATE

COUNTRY TEAMS MEET AT BRIGHTWATER Tn a desultory game at Brightwater Rover defeated Pirates by 6 points (two penalty goals) to three (one penalty goal). Neither side was at lull strength, each side playing 14 aside. Kirk and follow tactics appeared to be the order of the day, and there were no spectacular back movements. The teams were:— Pirates: Hume. 11. McMitrray, Faulkner, Winter.. Rogers, Shuttleworth, Marshbanks, Challies; Max,. L. McMurray, Hahn, Ilildyard, Collis, Cockran. Rover: N. Wratt, J. Palatchie, I). Wratt, N. Baigent, K. Newth, A. Baigent, Lawrence, Bayliss, McKenzie, Bridget-, Best. Cuthbert, Stringer, B. Bair gent. From the kick off N. Baigent- put Hover on attack. From a scrum in the Pirate 25 the ball went to Newth, who cut- in and made a. great attempt to “pot,” the ball going over the post. Pirates forced. From the dropout Best led his team to Pirates’ line, but a forward pass held them up and Marshbanks relieved for Pirates. Max and Me Mur ray headed a rush to the Rover line, but N. Wratt was safe. After some scrambling forward play in mid-field, Rovers attacked, a force down resulting. From the drop out the Rover backs went away, Palatchie making a fine dash down the line. The play from a scrum in the Pirate 25 saw Newth almost over, a five yards scrum resulting. Newth again almost forced his way over, but a free kick to Pirates put them on attack. From a lino out Rogers made a good attempt to “pot” a goal, and from a scramble on Rover line B. Baigent broke away with a great dribbling rush. J. Shuttleworth held up the movement, and a good kick by Marshbanks saw the play within five yards of Rovers' line. From the line out Rovers attacked, and a free kick saw R. Best land a goal from the side line. Rover 3, Pirate 0.

On resumption afUir half time Pirate attacked, llalm making a dash down the line to be soundly tackled by Newth. Play centred in the Rover 25, until B. Baigent headed a forward rush to Pirate 25. Bayliss secured the ball, and with a clear field in front of him was tripped from behind, The resulting penalty saw Best kick another fine goal. Rover 6, Pirate 0. From the kick off Pirate attacked and Rogers made a nice cut in, but lost the ball. Pirate attacked but Rogers marked marked a centring kick and found touch. From the line out J. Shuttleworth made a dash and kicked to his forwards, L. Max being almost over the line. Hard forward play followed, and a penalty in front of the posts saw Hume land a goal for Pirate, Rover 6, Pirate 3. From the kick off Stringer dribbled to the Pirate line, and a force down resulted. L. Max led the Pirate forwards back and a free kick against Rover saw Ilume miss the posts. Time was called shortly afterwards with Rover hard pressed. For Pirate L. Max and McMurray were outstanding in the forwards, while J. Suttieworth and Marshbanks impressed in the backs. For Rover B. Baigent was outstanding in the forwards, but Best and McKenzie also went well. Newth was the best Rover back, while N. Wratt and Palatchie also played good football. Mr 11. McUirr controlled the game.
