LEARNING THE BAGPIPES

PRACTISING DIFFICULTIES (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, 6th June. London’s Scottish Piping Society throwing its membership open to nonplayers of the bagpipes. This action corresponds in its raison d’etre to that of certain West End clubs who, when membership begins to dwindle, suspend the entrance fee. Young people are not, despite the example of the Prince of Wales, who is a competent performer, coming forward as they should to learn the bagpipes. It is. alleged that one great handicap is the difficulty ol getting a sale place to practise in. A trombone can camouflage itself in a really lofty attic, but the bagpipes have a superior power of penetration that demands a dug-out. 3 note that the bagpipes are recommended to women as the surest way of getting a rosy schoolgirl complexion. This rather disturbs me. I recognise that I may have been doing a grave injustice to our London street pipers. Almost invariably these romantic Scots emigres have the rosiest complexions, but I have always attributed it to powerful extraneous causes.
