Tlie second round of the Open Golf Championship was played at Mairfield when Charles Whitcombe took the load with a score of 139 for the two rounds from the holder, Henry Cotton, who was second with 142. The two final and decisive rounds will be played to-morrow. Sixty-two qualified. Additional lenders were: — Padgham 142. Perry, Kennyon. Branch, 144. Sweeny, Boomer, Picard, Cox, 145. Laidlaw 74-145. Holland, MacDonald Smith, Lawson, Little, Lacey! 146. Others include Lucas, E. R. Whitcomber, It. Whitcombe, Gadd, 147; Alliss 148 ; Eastterbrook, 75-148 ; Compston, Dailey, Mclleevie, Green 149; Mahon, King’ 150; Ezar, McLean, Seymour, 151; Thomson 75-151; llodson 152; Havers. Brews 153.
Those who did not qualify include Saynor 80-154; J. H. Busson, 76-156; Mitchell 157 ; Duncan, 80-160. “A wonderful exhibition,” was bow fellow-professionals described Whitcombo’s performance. He almost holed some shots to the green. Starting with threes he made only one mistake going out, and misjudged several iron shots coming home, but saved himself by bis putting. Cotton was followed by a crowd of 10,000. He played unconvincingly and failed to bole two-yard putts. He was three times bunkered coming home. Padgham started magnificently, and was four under par at the eleventh. After that he made a number of errors.
