RUGBY FOOTBALL

ALTERATIONS TO RULES APPROVED BY N.Z. UNION i lie lollowiug alterations (,o the rules of the game of Rugby as framed by the International Football Hoard, have been approved by the New Zealand Rugoy i nion. Law 2: Kick oil is a- place kirk from file centre of the halfway line taken (a) At the beginning of a match ; (b) On the resumption of play after the half time interval, (c) After a goal has been kicked i.e. the coinversion of a try, a held goal, a penalty goal or a goal from a tree kick and (d) kick off is a drop kick from the ventre of the half way line after an unconverted fry. Law 10: Any player who, through injury or any other cause, lias to retire during a match shall not resume playing in that match until lie has obtained tile permission of tlie .referee.

N.B. : It is not necessary that the game be stopped in order to let this player resume. Law 15: .The ball is not fairly in the scrummage until it has passed one foot of a player on each side, has been put in straight, and lias touched the ground between the opposing players. No foot of the first three feet of the front row forwards of each team, on the side on which the ball is being put in shall be raised or advanced beyond the line of feet of the front, row forwards until the bail Iras passed that foot. Other feet may be raised or advanced as soon as the bull is fairly in the scrummage. Note : When the ball has passed one foot of a front row player on each side it may be hooked by the first and fourth feet of either side. The second ‘foot cannot hook until the ball lias passed it and similarly the third foot cannot hook until the ball has passed it. Law 21, kick off: The ball must reach the feu yards line unless first played by an opponent. Previously it was an offence if the non-kicking side played the ball before it reached the ten yards line. Now, directly the ball is kicked the nonkicking side can come into action. Laws (23, free kick) and (24, penalty kick)- If the kick is taken from behind the goal line the ball must cross that line unless first played by an opponent. This alteration is similar (o that contained in Law 21 (kick off) and will remove any necessity for re kicking m such cases and will thereby tend to brighten up the play.

WAIMEA V. ROVER It was apparent last Saturday that Waimea are going to have the greatest difficulty in fielding a senior fifteen Ibis season.’ In fact it looks as if there is only the material for one senior team in the country this season. Adams, Mellarg and Lusty were the best of the Waimea forwards against Rover, the first named being the best forward on the ground. Brooks, playing a purely defensive game, was right in his element behind the Waimea pack. P. Fowler tackled fearlessly and had Hoituna’s measure all day. Todcl at full-back was very safe and must have saved at least 20 points lor his team.

Rovers gave a disappointing display. The forwards were just ordinary but they gave their backs a good share ot the ball, Hippolite and B. Baigent be'ing the most prominent. A Baigent at half sent the ball away weTi but his passes were not ol the best. Kotua spoilt Rover back play by too much kicking and Hippolite was inclined to do the same. Hoituna, a fine stamp of player, ran strongly, lint P. Fowler watched him well. Hippolite on the wing was a strong runner, but he did not got many chances. REFEREES FOR SATURDAY Senior Old Boys v.
