TAKEN FOR A RIDE
Although China has always specialised in picturesque punishments, its latest idea in this line isn't quite so drastic as some of the old ones. The authorities in Canton discovered that people were travelling on the local ’buses without paying their fares. This practice had to be stopped, so a number of 'buses were raided, and 500 passengers, who failed to produce tickets, were rounded up. The 500 were “taken for a ride,” but not to the destination to which they wore travelling before. They were carried in the opposite direction, dropped at a. point 20 miles from the city, and told to walk back!
