SHIPPING RATIONALISATION
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE DRAFT SCHEME PREPARED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 19th January. The preliminary international conference on the rationalisation of shipping, which has been sitting in London throughout the week, has concluded its deliberations. It is officially announced that a draft, scheme has been prepared for submission to national associations in the countries represented without in any way committing them during its consideration. Certain alternative suggestions, it was added, would he the subject of careful study by the secretariat and a fuller communication is to be issued in the course of a few days. It is understood that the drafting committee’s proposals include the scrapping of surplus shipping and the establishment of an international compensation fund. IDLE VESSELS IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND IMPROVED POSITION DISCLOSED (British Official Wireless) (Received 22nd January, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, 21st January. The Chamber of Shipping states thatincluding five foreign vessels of 13,494 tons net. there were laid up in ports of Great Britain, and Ireland 323 vessels of 878,416 tons net on Ist January. The number of vessels laid up three months’ earlier was 330. with a tonnage of 818,030.
On Ist January last year the number of laid up vessels was 482 and the net tonnage 1,239,550.
