PATHETIC CASE

CRIPPLE UNFIT TO DRIVE DISQUALIFIED BY MAGISTRATE (Br Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Declared by the traffic inspectors to be unfit to drive a car, Miss Ethel S. Wilson, a partial cripple, who was wheeled into court in a chair, was disqualified from driving for five years bv Mr Mosley. S.M., this morning. Mrs Wilson appeared under a City Council prosecution to answer a charge of suplying false particulars on an application form for a license, having failed to inform the Springs County Council clerk that the City Council had refused her a license. Defendant who was liable to a £SO fine on the charge was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Under the motor regulations tho magistrate imposed the five years’ disqualification subject to review should Mrs Wilson’s physical condition justify her making a fresh application. Counsel for the defence said the circumstances were pathetic. The woman had had a bad accident and was a partial cripple. Now the use of her cai was the only pleasure she had. She maintained that she was capable of driving it. Counsel for the City Council stud that the council did not want to be hard on Mrs Wilson but as many complaints had been received about her driving it was felt that she should be kept off the road. The magistrate said Mrs Wilson had not solely to be considered. There was the safety of other people.
