DEFEATED BY ASHBURTON SIMPSON FRACTURES LEG (By Telegraph—Press Association) ASHBURTON, 4th September The Ashburton Rugby representatives defeated Nelson by 0 points to 3. in a game in which the Ashburton team were in their opponents’ territory for most of tlie time. This was due to their superior weight in the forwards. All the points were made m the first spell. Stephen and McCormick scored tries for the winners, and McLean kicked a penalty goal for Nelson. The back divisions were evenly matched hut play lacked brightness until the latter part of tihe second spell. The first try came from a scramble soon after the start, Stephen diving over for Asliburton. Ashburton followed with another try, Stewart being caught in possession by McCormick; who followed up fast and crossed the line. Nelson rallied, the forwards taking play to Ashburton territory where an infringement gave a penalty in a good position for McLean to goal For the remainder of the spell Ashburton were hot on attack, but the defence held. After Hie resumption of play Aslibhrton looked like scoring on three occasions, hut Nelson’s tackling was sure. Then Nelson were compelled to force. At this stage A. Simpson, the Nelson half, was injured in a loose ruck near the line, fracturing both bones of the right leg. He was admitted to hospital, being replaced by C. Hellish. The Ashburton hacks started to throw the ball about more. From now on the game was more even and open, Nelson making several fine efforts, which were frustrated by good line kicking by Ahrnes. Simpson’s condition is satisfactory.
