MOTUEKA

REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY MOTUEKA V. MARLBOROUGH (From Our Own Correspondent) A representative men’s team travelled to Blenheim on Saturday morning from Motueka to play Marlborough, and were accorded a hearty reception on arrival by local hockey officials. The Motueka team although not victorious gave a good account of itself, the scores being two goals to nil in favour of Marlborough. The game opened with very fast play by both sides. Motueka took the ball right into their opponents’ goal area, but good work by the Marlborough left back saved the situation. The local forwards attacked strongly, the effort however breaking down through off side play. Not to be robbed of a score Marlborough made another splendid run clown which resulted in Smith goaliug. ■Marlborough 1, Motueka 0. Motueka forwards then took a hand. B. Smith centred nicely, but the chance was gnissed by over eager forwards. Bradley sent a good pass to Askew who just failed by inches to net the ball. Flay at this stage was fairly even, and Webster (Motueka) was proving his worth at centre half. Half time sounded with the scores unaltered.

On resuming Motueka, set up a hot attack, which however was promptly stopped by two of the local backs. A fine Marlborough move followed but was nullified by off side play. Marlborough continued to take the offensive and were decidedly having the best of the game. Their efforts were rewarded by another score, a hot shot that gave the visiting goalie no chance. Marlborough 2, Motueka 0. From the bully off Motueka had a fair share of the play. Bradley however missed an open goal. The ball was quickly returned to Motueka goal area, and several narrow escapes were experienced. The visitors assumed the offensive again and endeavoured to open their account, one good attempt was made by Askew, but he was just unlucky with the shot. Time was called soon afterwards with Marlborough the winners by two goals to nil after a very fast and enjoyable game. Messrs Smith and Underhill refereed the match.
