At the biennial meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre M.L.C. was unanimously re-elected chairman. In proposing the nomination Mr J. H. Harkness said the board was fortunate in having Mr Mclntyre as chairman. His Parliamentary duties kept Mr Mclntyre in Wellington for a large part of the year; the board had been fortunate in having him in Wellington so much as a member, but as chairman lie was able to serve the board to an even greater extent.
The motion was seconded by Mr E. J. Scantlebury and Mr W. Baigent also added a* tribute to Mr Mclntyre’s work for the board. Mr F. Carling said he could not see how there could be any other nomination. Mr J. G. Wilkins in paying a tribute to Mr Mclntyre’s work on the finance committee said it had been a pleasure to sit under the chairman. Mr Mclntyre was duly elected unopposed. The chairman thanked members for his re-election. lie felt the responsibility of the position and appreciated the honour conferred upon him. He considered none of his positions on tlie local bodies with which he was associated as important as .the Nelson Education Board. In a country governed by the people it was essential that the children should be enlightened in the interests of good government in the next generation. “What do roads and bridges matter compared with education 1” he asked, in stressing the importance of the work of education. Mr Mclntyre said it would be his earnest endeavour to give satisfactory service, and he felt sure he would have the co-operation of members as in the past.
