CHESS A BATTLE
The chess board is a battle-ground with kings, queens, knights, bishops and pawns, flanked by castjes, contending for tin, mastery. The names of some of the pieces have changed with times and with country. The English "bishop” (called by the French "the jester” and by the Germans "the runner”) no doubt 'dates from the period when prelates, as j great feudal lords, donned their armour 'and warred alongside their peers of the laity. As is the case with many of oui- sports and pastimes, the nomenclature of chess has passed into common parlance. To ‘check.” to "checkmate,” “to make the next move,” to bring about a “stalemate,” and to be a mere “pawn jn the game,” are expressions iused by thousands who have never looked twice at a chess-board.
