UNFIT UNEMPLOYED

RESPONSIBILITY FOR RELIEF (By Telegraph—Press Association) DUNEDIN, 26Ui April. Mr \V. Bromley, a monilier of the Unemployment Board, was present at a meeting'of the Otago Hospital Board to-night to discuss a letter which he hod previously sent to the hoard in respect to'unfit men and unemployment relief. The letter stated tlmt of a total of 1343 married men registered as unemployed in Dunedin and to whom jobs in camps had ben offered 1059 had provided medical certificates of unfitness supplied by the board’s doctor. In the eases of those men the Unemployment Board had no legal powers to continue providing relief from the Unemployment Fund. As the necessity for relief in some measure would still exist, and would be required to be provided for by the Hospital Board, the Unemployment Bojrnl was withholding action till 28th April. The letter stated that the Unemployment Board after that date would not he responsible for the 1059 men previously referred to. After a discussion, in which members of the hoard claimed that the letter was a- breach of an agreement reached in conference at "Wellington, and that the Unemployment Board’s action was tantamount to throwing good men on the hospital hoard, it was decided to hold a conference on Monday in an endeavour to reach a settlement.
