FIRE AT GISBORNE

hotel and shops damaged [By Telegraph—Press Association] GISBORNE, 22nd April. Shortly before midnight on Saturday a fire was noticed in G. ,L. Davy’s tobacconist shop and bail-dressing saloon in the Coronation Hotel block, a large wooden building in a crowded part of the town. The brigade responded quickly, and promptness saved tiio whole block from destruction. A slight westerly wind was blowing at the time. The fire hail a good hold when discovered. The flames spread on each side of Davy’s shop, affecting T. R. Gordon’s jewellery shop very badly and A. W. J. Mann's chemist shop to a slight degree, though the stock in the latter was badly damaged by water. Flames spread upward into the Coronation Hotel, which was badly charred in places, and eight bedrooms were damaged by fire and water. The insurances’ are ; Coronation Hotel furniture £2BOO, in the Sun and Norwich offices, and £17,000 on the building in tile Home Office. Davy's stock was insured for £6OO in the .Standard office, the total damage being estimated from £BSO to £9OO. Gordon’s stock was covered for £SOO in the Victoria Insurance Co., the total damage being estimated ai £I6OO or £I7OO. Mann's stock vvas insured for £ISOO in the Royal office, the damage being estimated at fi'TO.
