MOTUEKA

MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB annual meeting held | (From Out- Own Correspondent) At Ihe annual meeting of the Motueka Amateur Rifle Club, Mr P. B. Calder presided over a representative gathering of members. The chairman gave a brief resume of the activities of the club, during the past season, which, he said, could be regarded as a very successful one. The balance sheet, which showed a credit of £l7 6s 3d, and the annual report were presented and duly adopted. The financial position of the club was regarded by the meeting as highly satis, factory. Mr Calder stated that at the last committee meeting he had been authorised to purchase two rifles on behalf of the club. With an increased membership, which was practically assured, the club would .require to provide rfor three rifles. Mr Calder explained that two rifles, very little used and in first class order, could he purchased for about £lO. One of the rifles in question was examined by members and favourably commented upon . It was decided to purchase the two rifles on offer to the club.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS Officers elected for the ensuing year were as follows: —Patron, Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P.; president, Mr P. B. Calder; deputy-president, Mr J. 0. Anderson ; secretary, Mr T. Rolling,- treasurer, Mr A. E. Fry ; executive committee, Messrs F. Drummond, Roy Fry, S. Mather, H. Delaney, and 11. Boyes. Tile opening day for the season was fixed for Tuesday, Bth May. The annual subscription, as in the past, was fixed at 5s per member. The Chairman stated that, at a recentmeeting, a suggestion had been made that the club make provision for its own range and clubroom. A sum of £IOO, he thought, would be sufficient for the purpose, as the building could be erected by the members. The outlay, lie felt sure, was warranted. There should be no difficulty in getting twenty members to guarantee £5 each, so that the building might be erected. If a site could be obtained at the Cricket Ground a structure suitable to the requirements of the club could then be erected. It would have a fireplace and cquld be made use of by the Amateur Athletic Club and the Cricket Club for meetings. The chairman expressed the hope that the new committee would give the matter every consideration. He drew attention to the fact that the club’s targets, lights and sand, in the Horticultural Hall, had been pulled out in the course of the erection of a boxing ring. All the work that the members had done last season would have to be done over again ; and this was one of the reasons why he would like to see the Miniature Rifle Club with its own range and club room. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the committee to go into tlie question of a range and club room and to report back to a general meeting of the club.

Air Fry mentioned that the Municipal Band had in mind a club room of its own; and he wondered if it was possible for the two organisations to combine for their mutual benefit in regard to the erection of a building as outlined by the chairman. A vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Kelly and Caldep tor the use of a room, during last season, for committee meetings, and to Mr Bowers for the free use of a room that evening.

ANNUAL REPORT The annual report stated : “The Motueka Miniature Rifle Club’s season has been one of marked success, with a membership of 37. Considering that the season was a short one this is very gratifying. Special thanks are due to those who helped to erect the range and lighting, etc., and also to those who were generous enough to donate trophies for competition. The standard of shooting has improved, and, with the new B.S.A. rifles to start off with, next season should prove a still more successful venture.

“During the season a team visited Tasman and Nelson, and in both cases put up a very good performance, only being beaten by a bare margin of points. Our teams wish to thank both Nelson and Tasman clubs for the hospitality extended to them on their respective visits. A team from Takaka visited the Motueka Club and the visit was much apprecialed by all concerned. Much regret was expressed that our club could not see its way to return the match; but doing so at some future date. We wish to congratulate the winner of the club’s championship and all those who have won trophies. It is the intention of the club to form a ladies’ club next season, and also to open the range at a much earlier date than on the one just passed.”

RUGBY REFEREES

GOLDEN BAY-MOTUEKA ASSOCIATIp^ At the annual meeting of the Golden Bay-Motueka Rugby Referees Association, the following report was presented : “During the season the Association has had to provide referees for no less than 120 matches, which fact in itself, is a. tribute both to the Association and to the Rugby .Union. The standard of refereeing throughout was good, referees displaying an impartiality in keeping with the best ethics of this phase of theRngby game. Decisions were well received liy' the active players, who, indeed, displayed a desire to become more familiar with the newer interpretations of the laws of the Rugby game. At the same time there was a distinct lack of support and appreciation from the general public. In spite of this, your officers urge a renewed burst and a continuance of the support to the game accorded by referees in the past Particularly is it desirable that members endeavour to induce new members to join up.' -There are many of the recently retired players who are sufficiently keen on the game to assist in its control; and it needs but a little persuasion to obtain their membership and support. 1 *■ ' “During the season, officers, accompanied by members of the Rugby Union, journeyed to Takaka, there to endeavour to bring about the formation of a branch. The trip \yas a successful one and a branch was instituted, although direct communication \yith the association was not'maintained, in spite' of agreement to do so.' 1 “To Messrs Les. Smith and K. J. ITqlypake. M.R., the Association extends thanks for donations of benzine. Gratitude is also extended to the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ for .kindly assistance and tothe local Rugby Union officials.- Mention is made of the sacrifice made by, members in giyinp- their time to attend, instruction evenings, 'which were held frequently.through the season. To the. incoming officers and committees is extended the best wishes for a very successful year.”
