A CREDIT BALANCE
CITY COUNCIL’S FINANCIAL YEAR The Nelson City Council ended its last financial year with a credit balance, of £9OO and this fact was referred to at last night’s meeting. Councillor S. H. Moynagh said the satisfactory result of the year’s working was due to the close attention given the work by the Mayor, Engineer and staff, and he congratulated the Town Clerk on the collection of rates. The Council, he said, had had blow, after blow which reslulted in expenditure which had not been anticipated, ■ but those works had been done out of ordinary revenue. “The result is very creditable to your Worship, the staff, and incidentally to ourselves)” he said. In view of the position he moved that £SOO be transferred to the Waterworks Account, which it was pointed out, was ; carrying a debit balance of £3OO to £4OO.
The Mayor, Mr W. J. Moffatt said he would endorse Mr Moynagh’s remarks in regard to the successful collection in rates and the fact that the engineer had kept within his allocation. However,.‘in regard to Councillor Moynagh’s motion he thought it would be advisable to wait until there was :v full'Council before deciding on the transfer of any funds to the Waterworks Account. Two members of the Finance Committee were absent from the meeting. The Town Clerk (Mr F. Mitchell), pointed out that the credit of £9OO was an exaggeration. It would be more correct to say £6OO in cash for £3OO ' was earmarked for a Fire Board payment. Nothing had yet been paid to the Fire Board. Councillor W. Black added a tribute to the staff for the manner in which the Council’s affairs had been handled. Councillor Moynagh withdrew his motion as suggested bv the Mayor.
