NELSON CITY COUNCIL REPORTS ON VARIOUS DEPART* ME NTS FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of t'ne Nelson City Council last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt), Councillors E. 1!. Neale, F. \Y. Huggins, (1. P. Russell, R. Watson, W. Black and S. 11. Moynaglt. Leave of absence was granted Councillors Cl. L. Page. 11. E. A. Washbourn and S. A. Gibbs. PAYMENTS

CORRESPONDENCE ’flic president of the Nelson Swimming ’ Centre and others forwarded a letter of appreciation of the services ot the bath’s caretaker Mr F. 1. Ledger lonvardcd a plan ot a proposed sub-division of the Mount Vernon estate for approval. The matter was referred to the Engineer for report at the next meeting. The Telegraph Engineer wrote in regard to Hie removal of trees on Snow’s Dill. It was decided .to reply stating that a proper pruning will be done and the cause of the trouble removed. The District Public Trustee forwarded a- deed of novation regarding the estate of the late Air F. W. Faircy for perusal and consideration. The letter was referred to committee. Tlie Principal of the Boys’ College wrote applying for the use of Victory Square in certain hours. The request was granted. The Nelson Hockey Association was granted the use of the Botanical Reserve and Pioneers’ Park for the coining season. The Suburban Bus Company wrote expressing appreciation of the Council’s action in' marking out bus stands. The painted lines helped considerably in the despatch of buses. The Minister ot Scenery Preservation wrote acknowledging the Council’s letter in regard to the permanent preservation of the areas around Lake Rotoroa. and stating that the matter was receiving consideration. The Director of Forestry wrote in regard to the supply of trees. It was decided to ask for supplies if there is a surplus this season. Mr E. A. 11. Bisley asked for the supply of gas, water and electric light to Mount Vernon. The letter was referred to committee. The treasurer of the Golden Chance Art Union forwarded £57 to be applied to the relief of distress. The amount was accepted with thanks. It was decided that a portion of the sum be allocated to the Smith Family fund.

COMMITTEE OF WHOLE COUNCIL At a meeting of the committee of 1 fie whole Council held on -/Thursday, sth April, there were present: The Mayor (chairman). Councillors Watson, Mo'ynngh, Huggins, Rage, Washbourn, Neale and Gibbs. The committee reported as follows: As to Mr A. Jones’s letter re Hood water in Queen’s road: That consideration be deferred pending receipt of the Engineer's report. As to the storage of coal at the power house: That the (dans for a new storeroom and galvanised iron fence submitted by the Electrical Engineer he approved and that he he authorised to proceed with the work and to arrange with the City Engineer for the labour required. As to the application by tbe Regimental Band for permission to bold a Sunday evening sacred concert during the visit of HALS. Dunedin: That permission for a saerecl concert be granted as requested. As to the old fire engine: That the Nelson Eire Board he granted the use of the engine until the new one is delivered on condition that the comprehensive insurance policy is renewed and the premium paid by the board. As to the municipal conference: That a written report on the conference be submitted by the delegates and circulated to councillors. As to a deputation consisting of Messrs A. IT. Crawley and F. I. Ledger requesting the support of the Council to the proposal to hold the next band contest in Nelson: That the Council support the application made by tbe citizens’ committee and assure the visiting hands of a hearty welcome to Nelson. The report was adopted.

CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight ending 12th April as follows: (ytreets and Footways.—Surface painting has been done with a bituminous preparation in Hampden street east and lower St. Vincent street. It is an experiment and may serve to lay the dust, but there cun he very little wear in it. For this kind of work the road' surface must be in perfect. condition with sufficient metal to provide against pitting. Jf metalling is required it is much cheaper and more satisfactory to tar the metal before than after it is put down. As there is not an untarred street in the City in proper shape or sufficient metal on it for painting to he n success. it follows that the present system of lairing the metal'at the quarry is (he liesl anil most economical for this City. Repairs and top-dressing of the I’ort road are in hand, flood progress is being made with the widening and regrading of Maori road.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Air E. Fleming) reported for the fortnight ending 12til April as follows: City applications 2804 (increase nil); extensions 3803 (20); Taliuna applications 210 (nil); Stoke 113 (nil); AVakatu 30 (nil); total 7020 (20). — Lighting load applied for 1013 k.w. (increase nil); heating 3809 k.w. \(8): power 1903 k.w. (nil): Taliuna 318 k.w. (nil); Stoke 151 k.w. (nil); Wakatu 01 k.w. (nil); total 7915 k.w. (8 k.w.). Teak load, day, 500 k.w.; night, 700 k.w.

Tlie units generated for the year ending 31st Afareli, 1934, show an increase of 14,530 over the. corresponding jeriod the previous year. The increased coal consumption is 122 tons while the peak load shows a decrease of 70 k.w. The steel work at the power station is receiving a coat of paint. The staff are manufacturing another batch of 10 concrete poles. The total number of poles manufactured to date is 198.
