When it is observed .that “The World is Yours” is “a tale of the Yukon,” one’s thoughts at once turn to the many stories associated with the original rush for gold in that locality, of the hardships endured by adventurous spirits, of suffering in intense cold, of lawlessness and serious crime—material in plenty for exciting novels. But in G. B. Lancaster’s graphic presentation in “The World is Yours” —the latest product of the endeavour Press, Sydney—tile author'of “Pageant” deals with the Yukon of to-day in a brilliantly descriptive manner. As we are toldon being introduced to this fine new no.vei, the setting is at once a spectacle and a presence. It is the story of Tasmin MacDonald and Kirk Regard, two young people; the girl Jasmin- a daughter of the wild with a mystic attachment for its hilly silences, yet a vitally alive young person of to-day; the man active, handsome, virile—one who had fought in the Great War and returned unmarked, but with a restlessness of spirit and a lighter regard for life. The Killing of a man off the tracks of the Royal North West Mounted Police produces complications which become further twisted by the possessive interference of the elders of the hero and iiei'oine. The author keeps a fine grip of her narrative. The story, with its background of majestic spectacle, unfolds" in a well-sustained atmosphere ot suspense with many well-depicted tense situations leading to a strongly presented tragic climax. “The World is Yours” will probably be acclaimed as the most powerful of this New Zealand writer’s works. Incidentally, it may be added that she gives us quantity as well as quality. The Endeavour Press is rendering splendid service.
