TENNIS TEST

OPENED AT BRISBANE AUSTRALIA’S COMMANDING LEAD WINS ALL FOUR RUBBERS (United Press Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright) BRISBANE, 21st December. The tennis Test, England v. Australia, opened to-day, results being:— Singles Moon beat Hughes 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. McGrath beat Lee 6-4, 6-3. Quist beat Wilde 6-2, 6-2. Doubles Hopman and Moon beat Perry and Lee 8-6, 7-9, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5. Moon’s victory in the singles was due to his attacking play. Hughes was wonderfully consistent and made many remarkable recoveries, but was unable to cope with the severity of Moon s game. McGrath opened slowly but once he got his game going he hit shots accurately to all parts of the court, varying his play more than Lee, who was not as enterprising as the Australian. Wilde was /no match for the rapidly improving Quist, who was never extended. Wilde served as well as the Australian, hut his ground shots were much weaker. Brilliant tennis with many thrilling rallies marked the doubles match, Moon excelling in ground shots, while Hopman volleyed and smashed with telling effect. Perry, however, was the dominating figure on the Court, making many remarkable recoveries and driving, smashing'and volleying for many winners. Lee had brilliant periods, but was weak m comparison with Perry and too many of his shots found the net. Many volleying duels with the four players at tlfe net provided the big crowd with much excitement, and several times they iiad to be curbed by the umpire. Winning all four rubbers, Australia holds a commanding lead.
