The Rev. W. W. Bedwell, vicar of Kaikoura, has accepted nomination as vicar of Stoke and Talnina. Mr Bedwell will enter upon his new duties on Ist February next.

Many nurses and ex-patients will regret to hear of the death of Miss Melita Jones, for whom a memorial service was held at the Residential Club in Mountain Road, Auckland, on Tuesday last, states the “Herald.” . A large number of nurses, many of them in uniform, attended. The service was conducted by the Rev. E. Draper! Miss Jones, who was trained in Auckland, Nelson and Niapier hospitals during the years 1890-92, was an outstanding personality in the nursing world. She was matron of Nelson Hospital from 1893 to 1899,' was a member of the ■Royal British Nurses’ Association, of the Matrons’ Council, the Australian Nurses’ Association, and a foundation member of the Auckland Trained Nurses’ Association. She resided at the Residential Club in Mountain road on and off until her death. She was also a delegate to the National Council of Women for the Auckland branch of the association for many years. Until quite recently Miss Jones was engaged in private nursing in Auckland. By obtaining her performers’ L.A.B. degree at the recent examinations conducted by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London, Miss Mary A. Gilbert, of Invercargill, daughter of Mr W. T. Gilbert, J.P., can claim the distinction of being the first Southlander for many years past to gain that honour at such an early age (states the “Southland Times”). The successful candidate, who is a pupil of Miss May O’Byrne, obtained her A.T.C.L. degree when 14 years of ago and a year later graduated L.T.C.L. Now, though only 17, she has gained her L.A.B.

Lady Bourne and Miss Bourne of South Africa arrived in Nelson last evening’ and are guests at Wainui House. At a social gathering in the Mayor’s room after last night’s meeting of the City Council, it was learned from Mr F. Pettit, city valuer, that lie intended to retire next year. Mr Pettit has been in the employ of the Council for 24' years.
