WATER MAINS TO HANBY PARK
UNEMPLOYED LABOUR At last night’s meeting of the Nelson City Council Councillor F. W. Huggins asked the City Engineer what, labour was being used on the laying of the water mains to connect up with the Ilaiiby Park pumping station, Mr J. G. Littlejohn replied that the pipes were being laid by the Council’s staff, and the trenches dug by every available man under the unemployment scheme. Councillor Huggins: “Could not the Council make up their wages with a bonus or by some other way?” It was a necessary job which the Council would have had to undertake in any case, he added. The men were probably, not working at full pace under the scheme, but be considered something could be done in the matter. Councillor W. Black said it was a big question.
