THE HAWKE CUP MATCH TARANAKI’S CHALLENGE RECORD OF MATCHES Cricket matches between Nelson and Taranaki have not been very numerous, but this is easily understood. In fact, but for the Hawke Cup competition itself matches with any outside associations other than Wellington and Marlborough would have been very scarce. Apparently five matches have been played, two in Nelson, one in New Plymouth,, one in Hawera (against South Taranaki), and one in Palmerston North against North Taranaki. Of. these Nelson has been successful in four, and Taranaki in one. In two of the Nelson matches particularly, great finishes have resulted, perhaps that of 1900 being one of the most exciting in Nelson’s long experience, Taranaki, requiring only 56 t® wiu in the fourth innings, were dismissed for only 44, the destroying elements being Len Graham and Alf. Whiteliorn. In the 1907 match Nelson declared in 'the second innings, and in the last few seconds of the game Tom Louisson bowled the last man to snatch victory. In the 1911 match against North Taranaki, Gerald Allcott put up a wonderful bowling performance. During the course of the match he took at one stage nine wickets for 6 runs, taking the last five wickets for one run in the first mr.ings and (Taranaki following ou) the first four wickets in the second innings for five runs. Nelson and Taranaki have not previously met in the Hawke Cup competitions, as Nelson was not allotted a match during the time Taranaki held the cup, and Taranaki did not visit Nelson during the local tenure. With the playing of the forthcoming match Nelson will have met South Auckland, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, W r anganui, Manawatu, Rangitikei, West Coast and Marlborough in the course of the competition. The following is the record of matches with Taranaki:— 1896, at New Plymouth, lost by 59 runs. 1900 at Nelson, won by 12 runs. 1907 at Nelson, won bv about 50 runs. 1910 at Palmerston North v. North Taranaki, won by 9 wickets. 1921 at Hawera v. South Taranaki, ~ won.
