TENDENCY TO LEAN ON GOVERNMENT
COMMENT IN LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL (From “The Mail’s” Parliamentary Reporter). AY ELLINGTON, 20lli December. Speaking on the second reading of the I'inance ltill (No. 2) in the Legislative Council the Hon. J. A. Hunan said it was difficult to see how the Government could set aside moneys for the repayment of national debt' when the Budget showed a deficit. There was too great a tendency among the people to lean on the Government for help and there was a continual clamour by section of the community for favours and privileges. In his opinion there had fmen a. growth- of centralised government to the detriment of the liberty of the subject. The Hon. D. Buddo said there were signs of a definite improvement and he
considered next year would be much better than its predecessor. The lion. C. J. Carrington contended" that the cost - of government was too high, and he advocated the closest scrutiny of all State expenditure. In reply the Hon. R. Masters said
under the Public Debt Extinction Act, I money was set aside yearly for the re!"l payment of public debt. He agreed it ) was not time for the Government to increase expenditure. The Bill was read a second time and 1 passed.
