BRITISH BEEF IMPORTS FAILURE OF RESTRICTIONS TO BRING ABOUT RISE IN PRICES (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright) (Received 30th November, 9.30 n.m.i LONDON, 20th November. A levy on imported beef roughly equal to the deficiency payment necessary to ensure the home producer a fair price for his moat was suggested bv tne standing committee on beef to the Council of agriculture. The committee points out that restriction of imports had not achieved a rise in prices, and expresses the opinion that tariffs ai’e impracticable under existing agicements ami would not he effective owing to the large imports of Canadian live stock and Australian and New Zealand beef, which are duty free. The committee therefore considers a levy the best alternative.
