MINISTER OF LANDS

VISIT TO OAMARU (By Tolegraph—Press Association) OAMARU, 17th August. The Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, visited Oarnaru to-day and met a deputation of Crown tenants, who asked for remission of half the arrears of rent and that the balance owing be spread over a period. The Minister replied that it was the policy of the department to treat eacli individual case on its merits. No general remission was possible. Asked by the Returned Soldiers’ Association for an assurance that no repossessed property under the D.S.S. Act would be offered to a civilian at a lower value than the amount owing without giving the mortgagor a chance of taking the property at that value, the Minister replied that where the mortgagor was a trier lie certainly would not be passed over for a civilian.
