GISBORNE BURGLARY CLEARED UP
MAN PLEADS GUILTY (By Telegraph—Press Association) GISBORNE, This Day. The series of burglaries and thefts during the past month were cleared tfp in tlie Police Court this morning when Edward Ernest Welsh, aged 23 years, pleaded guilty to six charges of breaking and entering and theft, four of theft and two of the unlawful conversion of a bicycle. Accused, who was recently discharged from a Borstal institution, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on the. burglary charges, and was sentenced to two months’ gaol on each of the others, tlie terms to be concurrent.
THREE MEN FOUND IN SHOP CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. George- Grainger, aged 27 years, Patrick Gannon (25), and James Tanner (25), all seamen, were charged with breaking and entering Supply Stores warehouse in Colombo street and committing theft. They were remanded till 30th May. The police stated that the men were discovered in the shop last evening. POLICE USE BATONS The quick thought of a Post and Telegraph officer, and smart work by fom police officers, were responsible for the arrest of the three men, who ,it was alleged had broken into Supply Stores Ltd. The men were found inside the premises, but made a fight for it, and batons had to be'used.
Warned by the postal oilicer living opposite after seeing lights in the stores, the police, officers entered quietly. They came on the three men in the darkness, and took them completely by surprise. Two of the men made an attempt to escape. They were tackled by the policemen, and for a few minutes there was a regular “donnybrook.’ The police were compelled to draw their batons and in a few minutes the l three men were under arrest.
