APPLEBY BRIDGE

REPAIR WORK TO BE TREATED AS URGENT POSITION OF FRUITGROWERS The effect of the closing of the Appleby bridge on the cost of trunspoit to fruitgrowers by the diverting of traffic through Brightwater, was discussed at to-day’s meeting of the Waimeu County Council. Councillor Herbert Everett asked the Engineer (M-r W. Bullivant) how long it would be before the bridge was opened as it was a serious matter to fruitgrowers in that district. Councillor L. M. Palmer and the chairman (Councillor J. Colder) also pointed out the extra cost of the transport to the fruitgrowers. The Engineer stated that it was intended to drive piles and lift the bridge on the pier where it has subsided. While this was being done and pending a Public Works inspection it was intended to fill in the abutment and open the bridge as soon as possible. It was decided to write to the Public Works District Engineer drawing his attention to the river damage to the main highway and requesting him to treat the matter as urgent. In addition it was decided to make a request that a Highways Board grant be made available for extensive repairs.

In regard to the same matter the NevZealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation wrote stressing tile serious inconvenience ani extra expense to farmers and fruitgrowers in the Redwood’s Valley area. The Engineer stated that the river h in such a course and bed now that there was no hope of g fold being made at the moment.

The Federation is to be notified that the Council is expediting repair work on the bridge.
