Mr J- Farrell, solo cornet player of the Wanganui Garrison Band, arrived in Nelson yesterday morning to join the Regimental Band as professional cornet player for the. Dunedin contest. Mr Farrell was second in tho N.Z. cornet championship at the Wellington contest last year.

Hartnell, of New Plymouth, the new president of the .New Zealand Croquet Council, is a capable business man and is thoroughly con versant in ali matters pertaining to croquet Last year he. was the only vice-president, and in that capacity was of great assistance to the executive council. Captain Hartnell first played the game as a member of the West End Croquet Club, New Plymouth, in 1927, and since then has _at intervals held the position of president of his dub. At the present time lie is president of the Taranaki Association as well as referee and handicapper. At a meeting of the Wellington Employers’ Association yesterday Mr W. J. Mount joy was appointed secretary to fid the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr Frank Ross, slates a Press Association telegram

Mr J. 11. Ilarkness, Mayor of Westport, lias decided not to contest, the position at the next election in May.
