ANOTHER LADY GOLFER TO RETIRE

JU T HAS OXIO AlOI! 10 AMBITION' {From Our Own Correspondent,) LONDON, lOlli November. •Irtko IVti.sf* Joyce We there?!, Miss Mnid Wilson, who has succeeded her as Ihf premier British woman golfer, has decided to retire. She, too, has grown tired of tlie crowds, and the insistent claims which are put on her. “There are other things in life besides golf, although | sometimes think this is not the case, - ’says .Miss Wilson, "and I want to enjoy myself.”

But Miss Wilson has still one more ambition to realise. She is desperately keen to win the American champion, ship a feat which no British women lias yet achieved. She has made two attempts, once getting as near as the semi-linal, and she intends to postpone her retirement in order to make one more visit to America. But it is exceedingly doubtful whether she will defend her British title next year. She lias been taking part in championships at home for’ nine seasons, and, as I

have stated,, she is tired of all the fuss and excitement associated with them. In the circumstances it is probable that she will only play privately so as to remain in practice. The daughter of a doctor, who has given her every opportunity' to gain her bgh position in the game, Miss Wilson decides all these matters for herself without parental influence. Indeed, she has been entirely responsible for the way in yvhiclt she has developed her game. From the outset her aim was to approach as near as possible, to the style of a man. and in carrying out her scheme she has played more with men than women. And her golf is notable for the manlike wa_v in which she plays her irons, hitting crisply through the ball, and attaining exceptional length. Miss Wilson, too, has acquired much of the American golfer’s thoroughness, (she has gone out alone with one club, and practised for hour after hour. In her matches she has also adopted the American principle of playing for the par figures, and to a large extent ignoring her opponent. She has always carried a card, and faithfully kept her score, just as though she were playing a. medal round. 1 do not think there has ever been a woman golfer so met hodieal.
