NELSON AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

A Hireling of the executive, committee of the Nelson Automobile Association was held at the Institute Rooms, Hardy street, last evening. There were presentMessrs C. M. Rout (vice-president, in the chair), W. E. Wilkes, A. Bensemann, A. E. Dee, G. F. Kingston, E. H. Thomson, H. J. Savage, C. Hunter, E. A. 80116, ,J. A Harley, E N.. Montgomery, G. Cunningham, H. Barltrop, F. Sniallbone, F. Lusty, J. Biggar, R. Grace, W. Wotton, A. Gould, and the secretary (Mr E. R. Neale). The chairman announced that the quarterly meeting of the S.J.M.U. which was to have been held in Nelson this month had been cancelled. It had been suggested that the half-yearly meeting of the union to be held in March might be arranged for Nelson. The matter was referred to the secretary. The chairman reported that the warning sign at Parapara Hill should have been erected by now. The secretary was instructed to hayc the sign near the Globe Hotel, Waitapu, removed to the opposite side of the road. The following new members (18) were elected : Victor Batty, 11. V. War-drop, A. Baigent, 11. E. Bidford, A. O'. Birkett, E. Clapnan, F. Coleman, E. A. Edminton, Mrs E. J. Hammond, A. Hutson, Miss I. W. Hall. Miss D. M. Kemp, A. Meikle, R. W. Martin, A. J. Palmer, C. W. Pitts-Brown, G. F. Scoltock, A. S. Slater. A donation of £5 was made to the Collingwood branch of the R-.S.A. towards the cost of making a parking and camping area for motorists. It was indicated that the Association might favourably consider a further donation should the area prove suitable. Arising out of a letter from the -Marlborough Association as to sea freight on cars, the secretary read information lie had received ' from shipping companies. No action was taken. A letter was received from Mr J. A. W. Newport conveying the information that some of the Associations signs in Stanley Brook had been destroyed, it was decided to ask the police to take action in the matter. The secretary said that ho had arranged to have the signs re-erected. . Arrangements for providing cars to assist- in entertaining the visitors to the Teachers’ Summer School next month were left to the secretary.

GENERAL In reporting that- be bad attended a public meeting held under the auspices of the Nelson Provincial Progress League to discuss the transport regulations as applving to heavy traffic,_ the chairman said lie bad been thinking the matter over and bad asked himself what nolicv was the Association going to take next’year. He was sure the Act was croine’to bring the law into disrespect to a great extent. A lot of the Associations members were directly concerned and very gravely affected. Mr Rout pointed out various aspects of the Act which he thought were of an objectionable nature. Mr Gould expressed his personal appreciation of the lecture delivered to Hie meeting by Mr Rout. Mr Gould went on to say that lie thought some protest should be made against the Act, which he said, was “going to snake the very foundations of British justice. Mi Gould concluded by saying be was sure all members would be pleased at, the way Mr Rout bad represented the Association, and lie moved a- resolution to this effect. The motion was carried. Ml- H. Barltrop considered the regulations interfered with private enterprise. ~ , The visibility at- Hay’s Corner, All- - was mentioned, and it was left to Hie secretary to see into the matter. Several other matters were dealt with before the meeting adjourned.
